Santa Clara, California, and Oxford, UK – February 8, 2002 – Blackwell Publishing and Atypon Systems announced the launch of the next generation of Blackwell's premier electronic journal service, Synergy, at www.blackwell-synergy.com. With Atypon's Literatum software at its core, the latest version of the Synergy site will provide increased functionality and efficient access to journals across Blackwell's publishing divisions. In addition to the scientific, medical, and technical journals currently delivered through Synergy, the new site will also include Blackwell's social science and humanities journals during 2002.
In conjunction with a number of top tier vendors, Atypon has established a full service solution premised on the philosophy of focusing on core competencies. Under this four-year business service provider (BSP) agreement with Blackwell Publishing, Atypon is responsible for all aspects of content management, hosting, managed services, software support, and security. Major players that Atypon has assembled for the BSP platform include IBM Global Services, Akamai, Metromedia Fiber Network, VeriSign, DataSafe, WebMaster Solutions, Dell Computer, and Network Appliance.
"The new Blackwell Synergy has been developed by great partnership," said René Olivieri, CEO of Blackwell Publishing, "The collaborative working relationship with Atypon has made it possible to increase functionality and offer a far more valuable asset to journal authors, editors, societies, and readers. The project was delivered on time and on budget."
"The new Blackwell Synergy site is a tribute to what can happen when you combine technological excellence with high quality content and content management. Atypon has always focused on not just meeting the current needs of the publishing community, but on anticipating those just around the corner," stated Atypon CEO, Georgios Papadopoulos.
"We knew we were ambitious with our new specifications and schedule for Synergy and had given Atypon a huge task. Clearly Atypon enjoyed the challenge," explained Robert Campbell, President of Blackwell Publishing, "and not only have they come through with a first rate product as planned, but throughout we have been consistently impressed with their responsiveness and competence."
"With Atypon managing the 16 technology vendors required to run a 24 by 7 online service, Blackwell has to pick up the phone only once," said Ravi Singh, Vice President for Corporate Development. He added, "Now that the infrastructure is in place for the BSP, adding new clients will be time efficient and cost effective for all parties. Atypon is perfectly positioned to lead this market."
