Director, Publishing Technology and Innovation

Location: Santa Clara, California

The Director, Publishing Technology and Innovation will work with publisher clients to initiate, scope, estimate, sell, and deliver advanced and innovative online publishing projects.

Atypon is renowned for its technological leadership when it comes to online delivery of publisher content. Atypon continues to lead in content delivery with technologies such as machine learning, (RDF) linked data, open annotation and big data analytics and their customization and novel application for publishers. Atypon’s publishing platform is a high availability system that handles millions of website visitors and transactions per day. It supports multiple languages and currencies and is accessible from web, tablet and smartphones. In addition, publishers engage Atypon to create innovative work environments that enhance the productivity of the researcher and knowledge worker, who are the end users of our publishing systems.

Atypon has a global sales and development team with five offices spread in four different countries.

Specific duties include:

  • Propose and sell new initiatives to our publisher clients.

  • Assist in the drafting of functional specifications in collaboration with the company’s product managers and prepare and deliver technical presentations that explain products and solutions to existing and prospective customers.

  • Ensure product compliance with accessibility and privacy requirements of US, European, and other governments.

  • Frequently, our publisher clients propose a new product offering and work with us in drafting their expectations. The Director, Publishing Technology and Innovation will serve in a pivotal role as the technical resource and the client liaison in leading the development of these new initiatives, gather and analyze business requirements; serve as the technical leader in the proposal, development, and implementation of new technology offerings and will thus improve profitability by enhancing our publisher-specific offerings as well as our off the shelf products based on these customized projects.

  • Ensure that the functional specifications are written so that the development incorporates Atypon’s existing products; review project plans and coordinate project activity including estimating project costs and services that balance project profitability and improved customer loyalty. These product offerings increase the cost of changing from Atypon’s interface to another vendor, hence they increase client retention and are an important component to our business.

  • Assist the business development team in securing new clients by serving as the technical resource for requests for proposals and presentations.

  • Collaborate with sales teams to understand customer requirements and to promote the sale of company products that require extensive technical expertise and adaptation to customer environment. Visit prospective buyers at industry events or other establishments to demonstrate the product and inform about product capabilities, features and advantages.

  • Keep informed on industry news and trends, products, services, competitors, relevant information about legacy, existing, and emerging technologies, and analyze new technology developments in the publishing industry such as ORCID; FundRef; AltMetrics; and integration with social media sites (such as Google+, Twitter, Facebook); and COUNTER4, the Open Annotation Collaboration standard. Draw upon his/her advanced knowledge of technology concepts to translate these new developments into potential product enhancements and communicate these findings to the company’s product development team.

  • Protect Atypon’s intellectual property by filing patents under appropriate jurisdictions for innovative proposals and product features.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field or foreign equivalent. Five years of progressively responsible experience in the position offered, as a Head of Products and Technology, or related occupation.

Education and/or experience must include:

Sales engineering: Selling and managing projects from business development and pre-sales to project management and delivery with internal and external international teams. Analyzing customer expectations and business needs, managing client relationship in complex projects and specifying integration solutions.

Compliance: Delivering projects to government organizations that meet compliance requirements for accessibility and privacy. Auditing for compliance according to government regulations.

Product management: New product and solution development from concept to launch, including product strategic planning, market positioning, product specification, product development and product market launch in multiple geographical areas and languages.

Online services: Experience with web users and web market trends and application of best practices in user online experience, including registration, profiling, authentication, ecommerce, content management and web systems integration for projects with more than one million users and one million transactions per day, at peak periods.

Technology: Managing and delivering projects with carrier grade high availability and disaster recovery transaction processing systems. Hands-on experience with multi-lingual, multi-domain, and multi-currency system for both web and mobile devices.

Intellectual property: Filing patents in both Europe and USA.
